How these numbers are made

  • Chain-linked, adjusted for splits and bonuses. Each session’s move is NSE’s closing price divided by the previous close. NSE’s bhavcopy does not restate that previous close when a share splits or issues bonus shares, so on each ex-date it is adjusted with the ratio from NSE’s own corporate-action list: a 1:1 bonus halves it, and never shows as a 50% fall. Rights issues are adjusted to the theoretical ex-rights price. Multiplying the daily moves over a period gives its return.
  • Price return.Dividends are not added back. On a demerger or capital reduction the day’s move runs from the price NSE discovers in that morning’s special pre-open session, and shares received in a demerged company are not counted.
  • Closing basis. Every figure uses closing prices. The 52-week high and low are the highest and lowest closes of the last 52 weeks, restated for splits and bonuses, not the intraday extremes an exchange quotes.
  • Which stocks.Nifty 50 and Nifty 500 are today’s index members, so a stock that left an index during the period is not in its list. “All liquid stocks” are companies in NSE’s list of equities (so no ETFs), trading in the EQ series, that closed at Rs 10 or more, averaged at least Rs 1 crore of turnover a session over the period and traded on at least 80% of its sessions, which keeps penny and thinly traded shares off the lists.
  • New listings and gaps.A company that listed during the period is measured from the close of its first trading day, not its IPO price, and marked “Listed”. A stock whose record starts inside the period for another reason, such as a change of NSE symbol (treated as a new series under the new symbol), a return from suspension or a first day on NSE after listing only on BSE, is measured the same way and marked “From” that date. A stock that did not trade on a session simply has no move that day; rows in NSE’s trade-for-trade series (BE, BZ) stay in its chain.
  • Source.NSE’s daily bhavcopy (latest file), its corporate-action list (daily PR file), NSE’s Nifty 50 and Nifty 500 member lists, and its list of equities for names and listing dates. Updated after every NSE close, usually by 7.30 pm.

Facts, not advice. These lists record how prices moved, from NSE’s own files. They are not a recommendation to buy, sell or hold any security, and a past move says nothing about the next one. Oquilia is not a SEBI-registered investment adviser or research analyst.
