The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has changed how margin is handled when an investor sells shares and hands them over early. In a circular dated 22 October 2026, SEBI said clearing corporations will not collect margin on a client's later buy or sell positions, up to the value of the accepted early pay-in. The change takes effect four months from the date of the circular.

What Happened

Early pay-in (EPI) means a client delivers the shares they have sold before the settlement deadline. Under existing exchange guidelines, shares blocked through accepted EPI can already count as margin for that sale, and the sale value can be used as margin for other positions.

SEBI said it decided the new step after proposals from the Broker ISF, a brokers' industry forum, recommendations of its Risk Management Review Committee and internal discussion. Where a client has a net sell obligation in a settlement and the clearing corporation has accepted the EPI, the clearing corporation will, in real time, not collect margin from the broker on the client's subsequent buy or sell positions, up to that EPI amount.

Per the circular, the available EPI value on the trade date is the lower of the EPI done or the value of the shares sold. If the client squares off the sale for which EPI benefit was used, that value is removed, and any resulting margin shortfall is blocked from the broker's own collateral. This does not apply to trade-for-trade securities, which settle on a gross basis.

What It Means

For investors in the cash segment, money from shares already sold and delivered early can support new trades the same day without a separate margin block, up to the accepted EPI value.

SEBI has also told brokers to let a client square off such a position or take a new one only if the client's required margin is available with the broker. Investors should therefore expect their broker's systems to check margin before allowing these trades.

Clearing corporations must amend their rules, make system changes and publish the provisions on their websites. The circular comes into force four months after 22 October 2026.
