The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said it arrested an office assistant, or sub-staff member, of Punjab National Bank's (PNB) Pi Branch in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, and a private person on 3 November 2026. According to the CBI, the case concerns unauthorised debits of Rs 10.24 crore from various customer accounts at the branch.
What Happened
The CBI said it registered the case on 29 October 2026 on the basis of a complaint. The complaint alleges that Rs 10.24 crore was siphoned off from various customer accounts through unauthorised debit transactions, according to the CBI.
The CBI has alleged that the office assistant of the Pi Branch carried out these transactions in connivance and conspiracy with a private person and other unknown persons. An unauthorised debit is money taken out of an account without the account holder's consent.
The agency said it took transit remand of the accused private person from the Special Court of CBI Cases in Pune, Maharashtra. Transit remand is a court's permission to move an arrested person from one place to the court that has jurisdiction over the case. The CBI said investigation is continuing.
These are allegations, not findings of guilt; the accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court, and due process continues.
What It Means
The CBI release does not say how many customers were affected or whether the money has been recovered. It also does not say what the bank has done for the account holders concerned.
Customers of any bank should check their account statements and SMS alerts regularly and report any debit they did not make to their bank at once. If a bank does not resolve a complaint about an unauthorised transaction, the customer can escalate it to the RBI's complaint portal at https://cms.rbi.org.in. Where money is lost to online or cyber fraud, a complaint can be filed at https://cybercrime.gov.in or on helpline 1930.
The case is at the investigation stage. Any charges will be tested at trial.
