GSTN changes GST registration amendment: most edits take effect on validation

The GST Network said on 1 November 2026 that most GST registration amendments other than the principal place of business will take effect on submission and online validation.

Key points

  • The GST Network has put on the GST portal the substituted rules for amending GST registration, notified on 26 October 2026.
  • OTP verification of the signatory's and one promoter's mobile and email must be done within 3 days, or no ARN is generated.
  • A change of principal place of business will still be examined by the proper officer under Rule 19.

The GST Network (GSTN), which runs the GST portal, has implemented changes to the way businesses amend their GST registration details. In an advisory dated 1 November 2026, it said that after Notification No. 05/2026-Central Tax dated 26 October 2026 substituted the provisions on amendment of registration, changes other than the principal place of business will take effect on submission and online validation.

What Happened

An amendment to the principal place of business will continue to be examined by the proper officer under Rule 19 of the CGST Rules, 2017. For other changes, such as the legal name of the business, the addition, deletion or retirement of partners, directors or a Karta, additional places of business and other particulars of Form REG-01, the registration certificate will stand amended upon submission and online validation.

Online verification by one-time password (OTP) of the mobile number and email address of the primary authorised signatory and one selected promoter, partner, director, Karta, member or trustee is mandatory. It can be done on the GST portal through Services, Registration, OTP verification of GSTIN. The applicant has 3 days from the date of submitting the application to complete it; if verification is not completed within this period, the application reference number (ARN) will not be generated.

PAN, Director Identification Number and Corporate Identification Number, where applicable, will be validated online by the system, and the ARN will be generated only after these validations succeed. The amended registration certificate will then be made available on the portal, wherever applicable.

What It Means

Businesses changing their legal name, partners, directors or additional premises on GST can have the change take effect once the online checks are complete, without an officer's examination. A change of the principal place of business still goes to the officer. The 3-day OTP window is the main deadline to watch: if the signatory and the selected promoter or director do not complete verification in time, no ARN is generated. GSTN has advised taxpayers to furnish accurate particulars, upload the relevant supporting documents with the application in Form GST REG-14, and make sure the online verification is completed.
