GSTN to lengthen e-way bill numbers to 14 digits from 1 January 2027
The GST Network said on 4 November 2026 that it proposes longer e-way bill and consolidated e-way bill numbers from 1 January 2027, as the existing numbering capacity is expected to run out.
Key points
- The GST Network said on 4 November 2026 that it proposes to revise the numbering formats of e-way bills and consolidated e-way bills.
- From 1 January 2027, e-way bill numbers are proposed to go from 12 to 14 digits, and consolidated e-way bill numbers from 10 to 11 digits.
- Taxpayers and software providers have been asked to update their systems well before 1 January 2027 to avoid disruption to e-way bill operations.
The GST Network (GSTN), which runs the GST portal, said on 4 November 2026 that it proposes to lengthen the numbers given to e-way bills and consolidated e-way bills from 1 January 2027. E-way bill numbers are proposed to go from 12 digits to 14, and consolidated e-way bill numbers from 10 digits to 11. GSTN said the change is needed because the existing numbering capacity is expected to be exhausted.
What Happened
In a notice on the GST portal, GSTN said the change follows the substantial volume of e-way bills being generated. An e-way bill is the electronic document generated under GST for moving goods, and a consolidated e-way bill groups several of them, for example for one vehicle carrying many consignments.
The notice sets out the proposed formats:
- E-way bill number: 12 digits now, 14 digits proposed.
- Consolidated e-way bill number: 10 digits now, 11 digits proposed.
GSTN has advised all stakeholders, including taxpayers, GST Suvidha Providers (GSPs), ERP and software providers and API integrators, to modify their applications, APIs, database schemas and validation rules to accept the new formats. It said the changes will be released shortly in the Sandbox environment, a test version of the system, and that the relevant details will be published on the E-Way Bill Portal.
What It Means
For businesses that move goods and generate e-way bills through their own accounting or billing software, the main task is technical. Any software, form or database field that expects a 12-digit e-way bill number, or a 10-digit consolidated e-way bill number, may need to be changed to accept the longer numbers.
GSTN has asked stakeholders to ensure their systems are ready well before 1 January 2027, so that the transition is smooth and e-way bill operations are not disrupted. Businesses that use an outside software or GSP service can check with their provider whether the update is planned, and can test their systems once the changes appear in the Sandbox environment. Further details are to be published on the E-Way Bill Portal.
