Coal India's consolidated profit after tax rose 57% to Rs 6,547 crore in the July-September 2026 quarter from Rs 4,167 crore a year earlier, according to the company's filings with the National Stock Exchange on 29 October 2026. Its board also declared a second interim dividend of Rs 10.25 per share for 2026-27.

What Happened

According to the investor presentation filed with the exchange, consolidated revenue from operations rose 21% to Rs 44,179 crore in the quarter ended 30 September 2026 from Rs 36,553 crore in the same quarter of 2025, and profit before tax rose 46% to Rs 8,728 crore from Rs 5,992 crore.

The presentation shows the company's overall coal sales quantity in the quarter was 13% higher than a year earlier, and its overall average realisation, the price it got per tonne, was 7% higher. Coal production was 151.37 million tonnes, up 4% from 145.82 million tonnes.

Employee costs in the quarter included a provision of Rs 499 crore for the wages of non-executive staff for July to September 2026, pending a new national coal wage agreement. For the half year ended 30 September 2026, consolidated profit after tax rose 19% to Rs 15,397 crore from Rs 12,955 crore.

The board fixed 4 November 2026 as the record date for the dividend, which will be paid on or before 27 November 2026, according to the filing. The company said it will pay dividends only through electronic modes and asked shareholders to update their KYC details with their depository participant. In its review report filed with the results, the statutory auditor noted that, in the absence of the requisite number of independent directors, the composition of the board and its committees was not in compliance with the requirements.

What It Means

The record date of 4 November 2026 determines which shareholders are eligible for the Rs 10.25 dividend. As the company will despatch no cheques or warrants, shareholders need up-to-date KYC details with their depository participant for the dividend to be transferred to their bank accounts. The results are unaudited and have been reviewed by the company's auditors.
