The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has listed one drug sample as spurious in its monthly alert for September 2026. According to the list, a batch of Lactic Acid Bacillus Tablets (120 M) sold under the name Sporlac-DS, batch BDS25003, is purported to be spurious, subject to the outcome of an investigation. The sample was tested by the CDSCO laboratory CDL, Kolkata.
What Happened
Per CDSCO's list, the batch carries a manufacturing date of February 2025 and an expiry date of January 2027. The CDSCO laboratory found that the sample does not conform to the manufacturer's specification in the tests for average weight and for the assay, or measured content, of lactic acid bacillus.
The list gives the manufacturer of this batch as "Under Investigation". According to the list, the firm named as the manufacturer on the label has informed CDSCO that the batch was not made by it and that it is a spurious drug. CDSCO's remark says the product is purported to be spurious and that this is subject to the outcome of the investigation.
The September 2026 spurious list has only this one entry. It was tested by a CDSCO laboratory, and no sample on the list came from State drug testing laboratories, the alert says.
CDSCO's portal explains the term. Under Section 17-B of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, a drug is spurious if it is made under a name that belongs to another drug; if it imitates or substitutes for another drug; if its label or container names a manufacturer that is fictitious or does not exist; if it has been replaced wholly or partly by another drug or substance; or if it claims to be the product of a manufacturer whose product it is not.
