The News

OpenAI has upgraded its ChatGPT extension for Google Chrome so that the assistant can read the tabs a user already has open. Once the add-on is installed, tagging Chrome inside the ChatGPT web or desktop app lets the chatbot look across those pages. In a demo video, OpenAI showed a shopper asking ChatGPT to weigh up three open tabs, each listing a sofa they were considering.

The update, reported by The Verge on 15 October 2026, arrives after OpenAI wound down its standalone ChatGPT Atlas browser.

The sidebar has been refreshed as well. OpenAI says it now carries "the full power of ChatGPT", along with the user's complete conversation history across Chat and Work, without leaving the page being viewed. ChatGPT Work can also take control of Chrome tabs to send messages, complete forms or download files, and can organise or group open tabs. The Verge notes this mirrors Google's own Gemini-powered auto browse feature.

Why It Matters

The browser has become the most contested surface in consumer AI. When OpenAI launched Atlas in October 2025, the bet was that people would adopt a new browser built around an assistant. Folding those capabilities into a Chrome extension is a tacit admission that distribution beats novelty: Chrome's installed base is far larger than any challenger browser can reach quickly.

It also sets up a more direct contest with Google, which controls both Chrome and Gemini and has been weaving its own assistant into the browser since 2025. OpenAI is now competing on Google's home turf, relying on the extension ecosystem rather than owning the software underneath.

The bigger shift is from answering to acting. Reading tabs is useful; filling forms and sending messages on a user's behalf is a step towards agents that complete real transactions. That raises the stakes on accuracy, consent and liability, which is why OpenAI's own examples stress stopping before a form is submitted.

Indian Angle

India is one of ChatGPT's largest user markets, and Chrome dominates desktop and Android browsing in the country. That combination means this update could reach a very large Indian audience without anyone installing a new browser. For small businesses juggling government portals, vendor quotes and spreadsheets, tab comparison and form-filling are practical everyday uses.

The privacy dimension is sharper in India now that the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and its rules are being phased in. An assistant that reads open tabs may see banking dashboards, health records or employer systems. Indian enterprises that allow staff to use such extensions will need clear policies on what data leaves the browser, and IT teams may choose to block or allow-list the add-on until they have assessed it.

Payments are a natural limit. RBI's additional factor of authentication rules for most card and UPI transactions mean an agent can prepare a checkout but should not be able to complete it without the user. Indian AI companies such as Sarvam AI and Krutrim, as well as Perplexity, which has partnered with Airtel to reach Indian users, will be watching whether OpenAI's agent features drive paid adoption here.

FAQ

What does the upgraded ChatGPT Chrome extension do?

With the extension installed, users can tag Chrome inside the ChatGPT web or desktop app so the assistant can read their open tabs, for example to compare products. The sidebar now offers the full ChatGPT experience with conversation history, and ChatGPT Work can control tabs to send messages, fill in forms, download files and group tabs.

Is it safe to let ChatGPT read my tabs?

It depends on what is open. The assistant can see the content of tabs you share, which may include personal or financial information. Close sensitive pages first, review prompts that involve forms, and check whether your employer permits the extension. Indian users should treat it like any service handling personal data under the DPDP framework.

Can ChatGPT make payments for me in India?

Not on its own for most transactions. RBI rules require an additional factor of authentication, such as an OTP or UPI PIN, for most card and UPI payments. The agent may fill in details, but the final authorisation should stay with the user, consistent with OpenAI's examples that stop before submission.
