Meta builds its own AI watermark, and India is watching closely
Meta's new Content Seal watermark echoes Google's SynthID, but its proprietary design collides head-on with India's push to make AI labelling a legal duty.

Meta has quietly shipped its own answer to the deepfake problem, and it looks a lot like a tool that already exists. The company introduced Content Seal in July 2026, an invisible watermarking system that stamps a hidden provenance signal into pictures made by its new Muse image and video generation tools. The watermark is designed to survive the everyday abuse an image suffers online: cropping, compression, resizing and even a screenshot.

India's experience with deepfake fraud, from cloned voices in loan scams to fabricated endorsements by public figures, has already shown regulators that unverifiable provenance is a real financial-crime vector, not a theoretical one.
