The News

Canva has released Canva Craft, the first image generation model the design platform has built in-house, putting it in direct competition with image models from OpenAI, Microsoft and Google. The company announced the launch on Thursday and says the model is available now to every user worldwide, inside the Dream Lab tool reached from the three-dot option on the left-hand menu.

What sets Craft apart is a two-stage architecture. Rather than going straight from prompt to pixels, the model first plans the layout of a design and only then renders the image. Canva argues this gives users more precision, consistency and control, particularly for images that need readable text and objects placed exactly where they belong.

Craft outputs images at up to 2K resolution in more than 30 aspect ratios. The company says it trained the model on millions of human-made templates from its own library, spanning presentations, infographics, menus and social media formats.

On Design Arena, a crowdsourced leaderboard for AI image generation, Craft currently sits fourth, behind OpenAI's GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst, GPT-Image-2.5 Flare and GPT-Image-2. Canva plans to let AI agents connect to Craft through the open Model Context Protocol, and says faster variants called Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast will follow.

Why It Matters

The launch marks a shift in strategy. Canva spent the last few years wrapping third-party models in a friendly interface, then bought generative imagery startup Leonardo.ai in 2024. Owning a model outright means Canva controls its own costs, release schedule and safety rules, instead of renting capability from the very companies it now competes with.

The closest parallel is Adobe's Firefly launch in March 2023. Adobe leaned on the fact that Firefly was trained on licensed Adobe Stock content, and that commercial-safety story helped win cautious enterprise buyers. Canva is making a similar bet with its template library: a model schooled on finished, human-designed layouts should be better at the thing most business users actually want, which is a usable flyer or slide rather than an artistic one-off.

The text-rendering claim is the one to watch. Garbled lettering remains a stubborn weakness of image generators, and fixing it would close a gap larger rivals still struggle with.

Indian Angle

India is one of Canva's most important markets by user numbers, and much of that base is small businesses, D2C brands, educators and freelance creators who produce marketing assets without a design team. For them, a model that gets text and layout right on the first attempt saves real money. The timing also matters: the launch lands in the middle of the festive season, when Indian retailers churn out Diwali offers, WhatsApp creatives and regional-language banners at volume.

Regulation is the second lens. MeitY's amendments to the IT Rules on synthetically generated content put labelling and traceability duties on platforms that host AI-made imagery. Canva's emphasis on input and output moderation and reporting tools will be tested against those requirements.

There is also a competitive read-across. Indian foundation-model efforts such as Sarvam and Krutrim have focused largely on language, with Indic speech and text as the selling point. Canva's move shows that a vertical, data-rich application company can build a competitive model from its own content, a path open to Indian SaaS firms sitting on large proprietary datasets.

FAQ

Is Canva Craft available in India?

Yes. Canva says Craft is available now to all users globally, which includes Indian accounts. Users can find it by opening the three-dot option on the left-hand menu in Canva and selecting Dream Lab.

How does Canva Craft rank against other image models?

It currently ranks fourth on Design Arena's crowdsourced leaderboard for AI image generation. The three models ahead of it are all from OpenAI: GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst, GPT-Image-2.5 Flare and GPT-Image-2.

What was Canva Craft trained on?

According to Canva, the model was trained on millions of human-made templates from its content library, including social media posts, presentations, infographics and menus. That design-heavy training data is intended to make it better at structured layouts and legible text than general-purpose image generators.

Can developers or AI agents use Canva Craft?

Canva says it plans to let AI agents plug into Craft through the open Model Context Protocol. It has not given a date. The company also intends to release more efficient Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast versions in future.
